Sara Burke Sara Burke
Sara is the owner and director of The City Studio Dance Center.  A dancer, choreographer, and photographer, she has a degree in Theatre and Dance from Saint Louis University.  She is a member of the Board of Directors of DanceBrazil, New York, and a Commissioner on the Regional Arts Commission (RAC).  Sara has an extensive background in Dunham Technique and danced with Miss Katherine Dunham.  She has studied and danced throughout the world, including Brazil and Spain.

Co-Founder of The DisAbility Project, Consultant, Board Member
Fran received her B.S. from Washington University and her M.S from the University of Missouri.  She was the Director of O.T. St. Louis University Hospital, Truman Restorative Center O.T., and Adult day Care American Red Cross.  She has served as faculty for Washington. University’s Program in Occupational Therapy.  She has acted as an Occupation Therapy consultant in nursing homes and private agencies.  She has served on numerous boards over the years, but currently sits on the board of the Naral Foundation, That Uppity Theatre Company, and the Steering Committee of the Arthritis Foundation Silver Ball.  Fran is key in the identification of issues and audiences pertinent to our work.

Susan Hagen
Accountant and Bookkeeper
Susan has more than 25 years of business experience in the non-profit sector, private industry, and public accounting.  She consults with a numerous non-profit organizations in the St. Louis area including Metro Theatre, Forest Park Forever, the AIDS Foundation of St. Louis, the Academy of Science of St. Louis, and the St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre.  She is responsible for controllership functions as well as budgeting, tax work, and strategic planning.
Bob Horner
Sound Designer
Bob has a B.A. in Communications, with an Audio Specialization, as well as a B.A. in Business, from Webster University.  Bob has extensive light and sound experience, working in all kinds of venues.  He works with a diverse client base, including the JCCA, various religious institutions, MO Historical Society, St. Louis Blues’ Society, the St. Louis County Park System, Blueberry Hill, and Chuck Berry, among others.  He founded his own company, Ironman Sound Industries (ISI), ten years ago.  As the principal for ISI, Bob has worked with Uppity on sound design, trouble shooting, equipment repair, and running sound for many of our shows.
Joan Lipkin
Joan Lipkin
Founder & Producing Artistic Director, That Uppity Theatre Company
Joan Lipkin is the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of That Uppity Theatre Company in St. Louis, Missouri.  Her company founded the nationally acclaimed Alternate Currents/Direct Currents Series, The DisAbility Project, Diverse Works and The Louies.  A strong proponent of collaboration, she also co-founded Women CenterStage! with the Center of Contemporary Arts, the Nadadada Festival at The Forum for Contemporary Art, Democracy on Stage with the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, and the Mid-Sized Arts Cooperative. 

Joan specializes in creating works with socially relevant themes and underserved populations.  Her company has received numerous commissions from various organizations.  She has worked extensively with people with disability, women with cancer, GLBTQ youth, and gay men. 

A playwright, director, activist, educator, and social critic, her award-winning work has been published and produced throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Europe, Australia, and Asia.  She has been featured on network television, National Public Radio, the BBC and the Associated Press and in a number of theatrical journals.
Sarah Shimchick

Sarah Shimchick
Assistant Director
Sarah received her B.A. in Psychology from Smith College and recently completed her MSW from Washington University in St. Louis.  Sarah believes in the use of theatre as an educational tool and as a therapeutic intervention, with a specific focus on humor as an awareness-raising mechanism.  Sarah was an intern with That Uppity Theatre Company for one year before being hired as an Administrative Assistant and Artistic Associate.  Sarah has worked with youth of all different ages and from a variety of backgrounds in one-on-one interactions and within the context of small and large group settings.  These exchanges have ranged from the more formalized and traditional to the atypical and more informal including: serving as a counselor at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, serving as a Child Life intern at CT Children’s Medical Center, serving as curriculum developer and program manager for an after-school technology program, and managing a curriculum development team for an extended learning program in Washington, DC, among others.  Sarah has worked closely with Joan on a number of projects including: the DisAbility Project, Peace Out!, As American as Apple Pie, and Diverse Works, among others.
